Museum News
1) The 2nd Annual Photography Exhibit “Images of Ouray County and the San Juan Mountains” contained images by 16 local photographers with 69 color photographs selected. At the close of the exhibit on July 7th, 375 votes were placed for the peoples choice award. Images varied in subject matter to include wild flowers, mining ruins, trains in motion and atmospheric conditions. Neil Hastings from Mountain Village took away first place with his image “High Alpine Fall Cascade American Basin”. Neil’s photograph contains the flowing cascade of the American basin surrounded by the rugged territory dressed with lush foliage and colorful wildflower blooms. Second place was awarded to Ridgway’s Bill Hanson for his atmospheric photo “Evening Fog”. His photograph captures the magic of an aspen forest in a heavy, late evening fog. Third place was awarded to local Rancher Wayne Wolff for his image “Wolf Cattle Company”. Wayne’s photograph of 11 local cowboys moving 454 cows from Hastings Mesa to head quarters on Dallas Creek depicts a livelihood that not only sustains Ridgway in modern times, but also represents the towns’ connection to ranching history. The museum wishes to send out their appreciation to all those who placed their votes and to the artists who participated in this event. The Winning Photos are shown below.
