Thomas F. Walsh, Camp Bird Mine owner, philanthropist. Tom Walsh, an immigrant from Ireland, was trained to be a cabinetmaker. He did, however, pursue a variety of occupations. Walsh acquired enthusiasm for mining precious metals as he worked and traveled westward. His mining pursuits paid off handsomely when he discovered and developed the Camp Bird Mine. Tom took extraordinary care of his miners, never having a strike at "The Bird." He also contributed much to Ouray and its citizens by financing many projects.
